Periodic table summer challenge!
Periodic table summer challenge
Do you remember learning your states and capitals?
We're going to learn a different sort of map this fall in science class.
The periodic table! But only to #92 (and #94 for bonus) because those are the ones you can find somewhere mostly on the planet.
Here are a few resources if you want to jump start your brain.
Song with the lyrics written out
Periodic table with the elements in order
A long, good, but slightly goofy and long (did I mention it's kind of long?) video about the periodic table.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFKnq9QM6_A&list=PL10F665C5B8C4DF3A
and if she can learn it, odds are pretty good you've got this.
little girl sings the periodic table
and one kind of earnest song with adorable animation.

Fun brain link to periodic table quizzes (pick hard after you master easy)

June 2 Video on pig dissection; worksheet on protocol and techniques along with vocabulary
June 3 Observe pigs, examine tools, go over procedures once more
June 4-5 Dissection
June 8 Dissection debrief Last class meeting :( Go learn a bunch of science stuff and come back to school with lots of questions next fall!

April 23-May 1 Quiz Content: Getting Rid of Toxic Waste in the Body
The next week we're going to talk about how the body disposes of toxic products that arise from body processes and digestion. It's pretty incredible how God has designed our bodies to function well.

1 week to Science Fair!
One week! I am excited about this prospect for you to show off your mad scientist skills...wait, your mad skills in science.
Some thoughts that previous year judges have shared about making your project stand out:
Some thoughts that previous year judges have shared about making your project stand out:
- How does your research apply to the real world?
- If you had a chance, what other variables could you apply to your research?
- How could you extend your research further?
These might be (hint) great things to be able to discuss with visitors to your booth.

9 Days till Science Fair!
9 days till Science Fair! A few tips from your teacher who loves you and wants you to be successful...
Please bring your tri-fold boards Monday 2/20 or Tuesday 2/21 for teacher approval. Bring them earlier if you have questions or concerns. We are working on taxonomy projects and other independent work this week, so there's lots of time for consultation in class.
- You should be finishing your last few details at this point.
- Many of you have already collected data several times and are ready to start organizing your boards. Good job!
- I cannot stress it enough--- time is a great option, but it runs out. Don't limit yourself by putting stuff off.
- Your displays should be neat, well-organized, readable by someone standing 24 inches away, and demonstrate appropriate mastery of the English language. Complete sentences, clear concise wording, and correct spelling/punctuation will make your presentation look professional.
- On the other side of the coin, use your own knowledge to write up your work. Don't plagiarize or copy work from someone else. Your work, your words=engaging project.

WHAT TO BRING:
Water bottle full of water (no potable water at site)
Lunch (nothing that require heating or utensils)
Snack
Pencil
Jacket
A book for the car trip
WHAT TO WEAR
Clothes that can get dirty and which will keep you dry
Shoes that can get you dirty and which will keep you dry
Warm socks
Hat
Sunscreen if you burn easily
WHAT NOT TO BRING
Electronic devices or phones
Two scenarios: waiting to hear from WDFW sources on all possibilities.
Mostly likely:
10:00 Depart school
11:15 Arrive at site
Eat while we get instruction and wait for the tide to go out
12:00
Assist in digs, site mapping, building assessment and exploration
1:40 Depart for home
Possible schedule enhancement
8:45 Depart and visit a different site enroute
11:15 Arrive on primary site
12:00 see above
Questions to know the answer to:
What is archaeology?
What questions does it try to answer? (Three main goals)
What procedures do archaeologists follow? (1st, 2nd, 3rd)
What is a lithic artifact?
What is a midden?
Can you tell the difference between a pictograph and a petroglyph?
What types of artifacts survive decomposition?
What specifically is a focus of research in Washington State? (ties in with earthquake)

SCIENCE FAIR TOPIC DUE DATE
There is an important due date to know about. You must turn in your top three choices for a science fair experiment on or before February 12, 2015. Each choice must have a plan for experiment and data collection outlined with it as well.
Next week we have a planned field trip to Allyn WA to work on a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife archaeology site on February 13. I will post updates to the blog and give you information in class as well. Stay tuned!

Welcome to Life Science-- err, with a brief flashback in a couple of weeks...
Moving on over to the biology side of things... from sloooooooooooooooow big systems like weather to living critters. We're soon to start with the smallest of the small at the cellular level, but let's start with basic vocabulary to get your mind switching gears.
Things to know:
Science definition
Name the five characteristics of living things:
They grow, require energy, react to stimuli, are made of cells, and reproduce.
Homeostasis-
Stimuli
Metabolism
Reproduction-- specifically the difference between:
asexual
(passing on of genetic information from one parent to one offspring via mitosis, budding and the like)
and
sexual (two parent organisms pass on some of their genetic material to one offspring which demonstrates some traits of both parents)
Scientific method
Graph types
Metric System what units are used for weight, liquid, and length? What tells you larger units and what is used for smaller units?
People to know:
Redi
Pasteur
Oparin
Miller
BUT PLEASE don't stop thinking about earth science, because later this month we are going to be back in the thick of it for a day or two.

End of Semester Response
The next two days in class will find us responding to our earth science studies with a final essay and 10 item response. I wrote the question down for you on Friday and I will post the link here for your folks to view with you if they like. Hopefully you took some time this weekend to think it over and go back over your notes. I look forward to thoughtful, thorough insights about what you've learned this semester!
Semester exam
You've been brilliant, so this is your chance to show off!
